Travelling to Bern

Its central location in the heart of Europe and excellent national and international connections make Bern easy to reach from anywhere in the world. The extensive public transport network connects all parts of the city, and thanks to Bern’s manageable size, you can go almost anywhere on foot.

Travelling to Bern

Whether by public transport (train, bus or tram), plane or car – it’s very easy to get to Bern. The federal city is located not only in the heart of Europe, but also in the centre of Switzerland. The city has excellent transport links and is one of the hubs of all the main Swiss transport axes, with connections to both international railway lines and the European motorway network.

Arriving by public transport

Regular and direct train connections to all major Swiss cities and major European cities ensure a comfortable journey. The cities of Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and the holiday resort of Interlaken can all be reached within an hour by a direct train. 

The Swiss Travel Pass covers all Swiss public transport in Switzerland, and the “Swiss Pass” or the “Swiss Flexi Pass” are inexpensive all-in-one tickets for combined travel throughout Switzerland by train, bus or boat.

Arriving by car

Getting to Bern by car is simple and straighforward. Take one of the direct motorways in the direction of Geneva/Valais (A12), Zurich/Basel (A1) or the Bernese Oberland (A6), and you’ll be there in no time.

We recommend that you park your car in one of the city’s car parks during your stay. Many hotels also have their own parking facilities.

Do you need to charge your electric car? Energie Wasser Bern (power supply company) operates car parks with charging stations for electric cars at various locations in the city


Arriving by bus

You can also easily travel to Bern by bus or long-distance coach, for example with Flixbus or Eurobus. Good to know: the pick-up and drop-off points are close to the city centre, so you can start exploring the city right away.


Arriving by plane

Are you flying into Bern, Zurich, Geneva or Basel? Continue your journey by public transport. Zurich and Geneva airports have their own integrated train terminals.

Trains run every half hour, and travelling times are as follows:

Bern Airport – Bern main station: 30 min

Zurich Airport – Bern main station: 1 h 15 min

EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg – Bern main station: 1 h 15 min

Geneva Airport – Bern main station: just under 2 h
