The drive from the Breitenrain neighbourhood over the Kornhaus bridge late at night will amaze you: You will be able to see the outline of a colourful giraffe from afar. What sounds like an escapee from the Animal Park Dählhölzli is actually a huge, colourful statue in front of the City Theatre that has become a popular photo op. The giraffe is painted in four colours, each of them representing a different sub-category: opera, Bern Symphony Orchestra, drama and dance.

But keep in mind: The colourful giraffe is just one of the many highlights that the City Theatre has in store. You can discover various interesting and exciting things inside the building, which was built in 1903. The best way to discover them all is to go on one of the guided tours for children, adults and groups. Children will be able to try on wigs and make their own clothes in the tailor’s shop, while the adults will be lead through the impressive premises where they can immerse themselves in the world of artists.

For years, the institution Bühnen Bern (Bernese Stages) has been staging lavish performances and providing visitors with an unforgettable experience. But the City Theatre in the city centre is not the only venue where you can see plays, you can also do so in the neighbouring Casino Bern and in the Vidmar-Hallen in Köniz. Bühnen Bern strives to arrange a high-quality programme of classical performances and topical social issues to inspire and excite culture lovers from all over the world.

Did you know that...?

Following its refurbishment a few years ago, the City Theatre now has 650 seats (previously it was 786). The reduction in seat numbers was due to the installation of more comfortable, new theatre seats. The price category also changes depending on the circle and position of the seat. The city theatre is also accessible for people with disabilities. Click here for more information.

Hungry or thirsty? To avoid a growling stomach, visitors can indulge in culinary delicacies at Vierte Wand and attend one of Bühnen Bern’s exciting performances afterwards.
