The picture shows the interior of the Holy Trinity Church in Bern with its traditional church architecture. The ceiling has wooden beams and there is a row of pillars on either side of the centre aisle. Colourful stained glass windows let in natural light. The altar at the end of the church is well lit and there are a few people sitting in the pews or walking through the church, possibly in silent prayer or contemplation.
The picture shows the Holy Trinity Church in Bern with its high tower and a large round window on the façade. The architecture of the church is impressive and classical. The sky is blue and clear and it seems to be a sunny day. In the foreground there is a park with bare trees, suggesting that it is either autumn or winter. A green bench and a footpath invite you to linger.

In 1799, Napoleon introduced religious freedom in the city of Bern. This marked the beginning of Catholic life after the Reformation. Since the adoption of the Federal Constitution and the election of Bern as the federal city in 1848, more and more Catholics started settling in Bern. They were mainly federal officials from other predominantly Catholic cantons, and diplomats, but also migrants from neighbouring Italy.

During the Kulturkampf (a political conflict between the Catholic Church and the government of Prussia) in the second half of the 19th century, the original first Catholic church, Peter and Paul, was attributed to the Old Catholic Church. Consequently, plans were made for a new Catholic church: the Dreifaltigkeitskirche which was consecrated in 1899.

Nowadays, the Catholic Church of the region of Bern consists of 14 parishes, and various communities and missions speaking different languages. It stands for diversity and, with its social commitment, makes an important contribution to the lives of people in Bern.
