The idyllic path along the shores of Lake Burgäschi leads through a small alder forest, over hidden wooden walkways and ends at an inviting public beach. If you walk around the lake – a half-hour stroll – keep your eyes open to spot trout, perch or pike sunning themselves beneath the water’s surface. The pristine shoreline is home to a wide variety of plants, including sundew and cranberries. In early summer, lovely white water lilies decorate the lake’s surface, while frosted layers of ice create a magical scene during the cold winter months.

Fun activities at Lake Burgäschi

Since a large part of the area is a nature reserve, swimming is permitted at the northeast shore beach or at the public swimming area only. A diving board, raft, beach volleyball court and barbecue area create a relaxed beach atmosphere. If you want to enjoy the lake without getting wet, there are rowboats for rent onsite. A bistro offers a selection of delicious, appealing items to keep any hunger pangs at bay.

The lake of Burgäschi is especially popular among anglers. From May to October, fishing is permitted from the shore or from boats. The Volg grocery store in Aeschi sells day permits for those interested in fishing. We wish you tight fishing rods!


Restaurant Seeblick

Whether you choose to sit on the spacious outside patio or in the cozy lounge, the “Seeblick” restaurant serves fresh and seasonal dishes from the region. Made famous on the SRF TV program “Mini Beiz, dini Beiz”, the inn’s excellent value for money impresses its patrons. Featuring handmade pasta, wild mushrooms with puff pastry, and the house specialty of fish, there is something on the menu for all gourmets to enjoy.

A place of legends and history

The history of Lake Burgäschi in Aeschi near Herzogenbuchsee is rich and varied. Pile dwellers first came to live on the shores of this moor lake over 6,000 years ago. During the 12th century, the men of Äschi built a castle, which was completely destroyed during a battle 200 years later. Only the name of the locality still reminds us of the medieval times of knights, lords of the castle and minstrels is the name of the locality.

The archaeological site where artifacts from the lake’s eventful past were found belongs to a series of 111 sites across 6 European countries that have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. An educational route well worth visiting was created in cooperation with the Solothurn Natural History Museum. Information plaques set up along the shoreline provide all sorts of interesting facts about the history, nature and culture of this historical spot. The exhibit at the Pächterhaus Solothurn tenant house also presents archaeological finds from the region that date back to ancient and early history.

The recreational area around the lake of Burgäschi is considered by many to be a source of natural energy, coupled with its fairy-tale legends and powerful myths. A tour along the shoreline allows visitors to hear all about the many stories and mysterious lore of this spot.

Our tip: A torch-lit tour in winter is a particularly exciting experience.
