Shortly after Burgdorf, it becomes intimate and cozy. You head towards Bern but remain consistently at altitude, from where you can overlook the area up to Lake Neuchâtel. Along the way, you will find long stretches where hardly a soul is encountered until you are pleasantly surprised at Utzigen Castle by a charming café where you can stop and visit the castle garden. Over another elevation, you roll gently back to Burgdorf, so that after a total of 43 kilometers, you will be completely enchanted by the Emmental.
Places to eat: Along the route, cozy inns and small farm taverns await you. Some restaurants and cafés have irregular opening hours. To avoid cycling to the next door with hungry stomachs, we recommend checking the opening hours in advance on the establishments’ websites.
Tip from the author
Enjoy a few minutes of baroque leisure in the Utzigen castle garden.

Directions
Soon after Burgdorf, the route disappears into cozy forest sections and areas with magnificent views into the Krauchthal. Without traffic, you float high above the Central Plateau and enjoy the opulence of the landscape. Only in Utzigen do you re-enter civilization but are rewarded with a castle and a restaurant. Then you head to the Mänziwilegg elevation, whose vantage point offers views of the city of Bern and far views up to Lake Neuchâtel.
Over magnificent ridges, you are led back to the Emmental, where you can visit the place of activity of Gotthelf in Lützelflüh. Shortly after, you are back in Burgdorf with the proud fortress above the Emme.
