St. Urban Monastery was founded in 1194 by monks from Lützel Abbey. Highs and lows shaped the history of the monastery over the centuries until its dissolution in 1848.
The monastery church is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments in Switzerland. The present complex was built in the first half of the 18th century by the Vorarlberg master builder Franz Beer under Abbot Malachias Glutz. Characterised by unique Baroque architecture, the monastery complex with its numerous sights enjoys a reputation far beyond the region. Carefully restored in several stages, the monastery has shone in full splendour since its 800th anniversary in 1994. Particularly worth seeing is the church with its twin-towered façade – an architectural masterpiece in both exterior and interior design.

Impressive interior architecture
The world-famous choir stalls, which hold a fascinating history, feature a richly carved pictorial Bible in oak and walnut. The historic Bossart organ, with over 2,500 pipes and a powerful sound, can regularly be heard at concerts and church services. The library, an atmospheric space adorned with exquisite carvings depicting the seasons, continents and elements, is a remarkable witness to the past. The grand hall, with its elegant stucco decoration and marble finish, impresses with its airy spaciousness and splendid design, offering views of the monastery park. The staircase in the west wing, finished in refined white, leads up to the Baroque rooms and the abbot’s chambers.
