We stand in Burgdorf and marvel. At the castle that towers on a rock above the town and at the Gysnauflühe, four striking sandstone formations rising on the right bank of the Emme. The Gysnauflühe and the former Zähringen fortress are the town's landmarks and can be wonderfully linked on this family-friendly discovery route.
From the train station, you first walk down to the Emme and the Waldeggbrügg. We cross the bridge and the Emme, then climb the Waldegghole, entering the nature reserve of the Gysnauflühe. The hiking trail winds from rock to rock through the forest, with plenty to discover for children: lizards hiding under gnarled roots, mushrooms best admired but not touched, and from the first rock a lovely view over the town and the castle. The steep descent down to the Bartholomäus Chapel is also adventurous. The chapel was formerly called the Siechenkapelle, as it served leprosy patients who had to live outside the city walls as a place of worship. Today the chapel is used for services, weddings, and concerts. At the Wynigebrügg we reach the Emme again and walk back individually from there to Burgdorf train station.
Tip from the author
The short circular hike leaves time afterwards for a stroll through town, or depending on the season, for swimming and barbecuing by the Emme.
