For over thirty years, on the first weekend after spring holidays, the big racing days are taking over Bern’s old town. On Friday, the vehicles are tested for their driveability, Saturday is training day, and on Sunday, it’s time for the big showdown: Up to 90 soapboxes are competing in the big race and speeding down the 500-metre-long rack in various disciplines. The closing ceremony is just one more chance for participants to celebrate, receive their prizes and pick up their certificate of participation

The solidarity for and commitment to the soapbox race is evidence of how deeply rooted in Bernese culture this event is. Every year, a huge number of volunteers ensure that about 250 children and young adults make it to the starting line with their self-built racing cars.

Bern’s big racing days are more than just a competition – they promote teamwork, craftsmanship and creativity. It’s a unique community experience for participants, families and spectators alike. The event unites and excites the different generations and has become an integral part of the spring awakening in Bern.

Please note: if you want to participate in the race, you must register in advance.

By the way: Bern’s traditional soapbox race is an event for the whole family, and, like yodelling and swimming in the River Aare, on the official list of living traditions in Switzerland.
