Alpabfahrt – an Emmental tradition

In the Emmental, autumn is quite literally rung in as summered cattle arrive in the villages of Sumiswald and Wasen to the sound of Treicheln (large cowbells).

Every year on a Friday at the end of September, the valley celebrates the return of over 850 cows from the alpine pastures. The procession with its ringing bells can be heard wide and far. As they arrive, the beautifully decorated animals and the cowherders who looked after them over the summer are welcomed and celebrated by hundreds of spectators. After more than 100 days high up in the mountains, the herds are returned to the farmers in this traditional event. An unforgettable, authentically Emmental experience.

During and after the procession, the Wasen Women’s Association and the “Alpabfahrtsbeizli” have got the catering covered. There is also a bouncy castle for younger visitors and in the evening, the “Örgelifäger” accordion band provides folkloric musical entertainment.
