Boxing Day Bern

Left hook, right hook, upper cut, cross and jab: Boxing Day in Bern is all about actual boxing! The event with the same name as the bank holiday will be taking place above the rooftops of the federal city at Kursaal Bern. Main event of the evening and fighting to defend his WBO Intercontinental title: Angelo Peña, Switzerland’s number one boxer.

Boxing Day, which originated in the United Kingdom, has nothing to do with boxing per se. And yet, one day after Christmas, everything in Bern revolves around the sport as the Kursaal’s largest hall turns into a boxing arena for the day.

Entering the world of boxing is not easy for newcomers. There are many different governing bodies in boxing in which world championship titles can be won. The WBA (World Boxing Association), the IBF (International Boxing Federation) and the WBO (World Boxing Organization) are among the largest and most important. Boxers are divided into so-called weight classes to match competitors against others of their own size. Weight classes include flyweight, featherweight and heavyweight, among others.

Also competing in the event on 26 December is Switzerland’s Angelo Peña. The 30-year-old Madrid native and son of Dominican parents has been setting the standard in Swiss boxing. Three years ago, he gave his pro debut at the Boxing Day event and masterfully won the fight. He has added a further nine victories in the super featherweight category since, six of them by knockout. His most recent achievement: winning the WBO Intercontinental title, one of the most important in the sport. A title that he wants to defend at the end of December.

But he is not the only one standing in the ring in the Kursaal; other promising talents will be competing against each other in the run-up to his match. Tickets for the event can be purchased on the Swiss Pro Boxing website with prices starting at CHF 79. Doors open at 2 p.m., the first match is expected to begin at 3 p.m.
