The picture shows the traditional Sichlete Alpabzug in Bern's old town. People in traditional costumes lead festively decorated cows through the streets. The cheerful atmosphere, despite the light rain, reflects the deep connection with tradition and community.

Cows in front of the Parliament Building? Yup, but only once a year! On 15 September, farmers from throughout the canton of Bern will be showcasing their profession at the “Sichlete” in the heart of the city.

The traditional event will be rung in (quite literally) at 10 a.m. by the Treichlergruppe Oberbalm and their cowbells. In addition to speeches and the arrival of the “Alpabzug” (cattle drive coming back from summer in the Alps), the programme also includes a procession from the Nationales Pferdezentrum to Bundesplatz and sheep shearing. A special highlight: “Chabis und Rüebli” (cabbage and carrots), where fresh cabbage is sliced on site. Countless other culinary delights are offered at the various market stalls. Don’t miss this day filled with highlights and traditions in the heart of the federal city!
