Rose Garden

The magic of cherry blossom in spring, around 250 varieties of roses in bloom in summer, a blaze of colour in the autumn months and the cosy fondue veranda of the Rosengarten restaurant in the winter season make a visit to the rose garden something special at any time of year.

A soft autumn light embraces the city of Bern, with the characteristic silhouette of the cathedral rising elegantly above the colourful trees and the calm Aare, conveying a sense of peace and timeless beauty.

A thriving meeting place

Whether you stroll slowly through the park, read a book on a bench, share a picnic with friends, enjoy the sunset as a couple or simply sit on a garden wall and swing your legs, the Rose Garden’s relaxed atmosphere invites visitors young and old to stay a while. Locals treasure the park as a romantic spot for dates and a popular after-work meeting place.

Situated high above the Unesco World Heritage Site, the public park offers a lovely view of Bern’s Old town with all its sights and landmarks. When the weather is clear, the view extends far beyond the city to Bern’s local mountain, the Gurten, and all the way to the Alps. This means the Rose Garden is more than just a recreational area – it’s also the perfect place for fantastic souvenir photos.

Flora

Although its name suggests otherwise, the Rose Garden is also known for its variety of flower species. Over 400 types of roses and irises as well as 28 different rhododendrons flourish all over the park. An enchanting water lily pond with fountain and the large, open grassy areas give the park a spacious feel.

The explosion of blossoms on the Japanese cherry trees in the spring is a particularly mesmerizing sight. Around the end of March and the beginning of April, the exotic trees put on an eye-catching display of beauty. Six months later, their leaves turn color and treat visitors to another vivid spectacle.

By the way, the Rose Garden used to fulfill a completely different purpose. It served as the cemetery for the lower part of the Old Town from 1765 until 1877. Its transformation into a recreational park took place in stages, and the garden has only been a public facility since 1913.

An Oasis for Young and Old Alike

A pavilion with a library and attached reading garden is the best spot for relaxing. Bookworms can peruse the shelves of the open-access library without registering. Instead of borrowing a book to take home, you can read in the garden and return your book at the end of the day. The library is open on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons from the end of April until mid-October.

The Rose Garden is also an exciting place for young visitors to play and run around. The playground’s main attraction is a large red wooden dragon that waits for children under the shady trees. The ideal spot for climbing, swinging, balancing and building sandcastles!
