Just like the federal city, pubs are lively gathering places where everyone is welcome. Learn all about pub culture, beer history and the brewing process at four locations around Bern railway station on the “Popping to the Pub” tour. What goes on in these public houses, as they were originally called, and how did they get their name? And which beers are served here? A professional tasting of three beers at each location is, of course, part of the programme, along with interesting facts and figures about the individual beers.

Experience traditional pub culture at the following four locations:

Mr. Pickwick’s Pub

A home away from home, that’s what the famous Mr. Pickwick Pubs embody. Pickwick’s, with its wooden furniture, football and different beers, has been an integral part of Bern’s pub culture for over 40 years. You’ll find British and Irish beers as well as locally brewed varieties here.

L’Ovestino

Pub meets club in a former cinema! Sample beers from the Bernese breweries Felsenau, Braukunst and Schuum amid popcorn machines and dartboards.

Simmentaler Brewhouse

Beer brewed in Bern’s main station? Yep! You can find it at Simmentaler Brewhouse. Its large beer tanks are visible from afar, containing speciality beers that are brewed several times a month. You can also enjoy their classic beers brewed in Lenk in the Simmental.

McCarthy’s Irish Pub

As soon as you set your foot inside this pub on Aarbergergasse, you’ll feel as though you’ve left Bern behind and landed in Ireland. McCarthy’s celebrates Irish pub culture – football, darts and cricket on TV and the tasty beers on tap all contribute to the unique experience.

If you’re feeling peckish, you needn’t go far: McCarthy’s also serves hearty pub food.

Still eager to learn more about beer? The Bernese Beer Tour offers fascinating brewing stories, selected tastings and beer enjoyment in great company.
