Bern’s best cinnamon buns
The sweet treat from Scandinavia has long found its way into our bakeries and our hearts. Be it vegan, with a special secret ingredient or the traditional Swedish way, here are the best cinnamon buns the city of Bern has to offer.
Becanto
This popular brunch restaurant in the Breitenrain neighbourhood not only serves a great breakfast, but also delicious homemade cinnamon rolls, appetisingly presented on a classic cake stand with a glass lid. We recommend pairing them with a freshly brewed cappuccino and enjoying the cosy atmosphere surrounded by wooden furniture, books and plants. Becanto is especially family friendly, with a selection of children’s books and toys to “Zit vertörle” (pass the time). The café has a second location in Bern’s west, so no one needs to go without the delicious treat wherever they are.
Le Bread Sourdough
If you’re in the Monbijou neighbourhood and craving a cinnamon roll, you better get to Le Bread Sourdough sooner rather than later: its good reputation precedes it and the high-quality baked goods are usually sold out by lunchtime. As the name suggests, the cinnamon buns here are made from sourdough – a wheat sourdough starter called Louie, to be precise. Le Bread’s sweet offering is extensive: the classic cinnamon bun is always on offer, but there are also other versions of the tasty treat, such as cardamom, lemon and poppy seed, and a vegan chocolate bun. By the way: this place is also very popular with families.
Bakery Bakery
Your diet doesn’t include dairy? We’ve got you! Bakery Bakery, Switzerland’s first vegan bakery and present at several locations in the federal city, is a popular choice for vegan cinnamon buns. Its vegan recipe has become so refined that we believe we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in a blind tasting. If you have a bit of time, we recommend enjoying your treat in-house rather than getting it to go – Bakery Bakery has different books and fun games for guests. The perfect way to start your day or end your lunch break!
Bread à Porter
Enjoy your cinnamon buns in a placed steeped in history: Bread à Porter is located in the oldest bakery on Münstergasse. Every Thursday and Saturday, the delicious, fluffy treats are made here using local ingredients – “Anke” (butter) from Noflen and fresh milk from Rüegsau, for example. The dough is left to rise for around four hours before being shaped and baked, ensuring first-class quality. Gourmets might be able to taste what else makes Bread à Porter’s cinnamon buns special: a ground tonka bean is added to the cinnamon sugar, giving the rolls their unmistakable flavour.
Caffè Bar Sattler
As its name, “saddler”, suggests, this café on Mittelstrasse in Bern’s Länggasse neighbourhood used to be a saddlery. Today, you won’t find any more leather goods here, but instead a cosy space for coffee, snacks and drinks. Underbara Bullar’s typical Swedish bullar – cinnamon buns – are also sold here. The traditional pastries, which are enjoyed in Sweden for fika (a coffee or tea break), are lovingly prepared by hand by Sweden enthusiast Noomi Bauer. If you’re feeling nostalgic for the north, treat yourself to some cinnamony goodness at Caffè Bar Sattler and savour the moment alongside your bullar.
