On the Sagenweg in the Bipper-Jura

A wonderful hike with great views of the Bernese Alps. The path mostly follows the Sagenweg (legend trail). Here and there you will find panels with various legends that may have taken place in the Bipper-Jura. The route description also includes the highlights of the Sagenweg. In the map - which you can order here for free - more scenic hikes are described.

The Bipper Jura – the gently rising Jura mountains at the edge of the canton of Bern – is a true gem for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers. The idyllic villages of Wolfisberg, Farnern, and Rumisberg are nestled between lush green meadows, extensive forests, and impressive rock formations – high above the Swiss plateau with a magnificent view of the Alpine chain.

Experience nature, find peace

Whether you enjoy leisurely walks or sporty mountain hikes – the hiking area around the Bipper Jura offers something for every taste. Well-maintained trails lead through intact nature, past flower meadows, shady forest paths, and beautiful viewpoints.

Views and panoramas

The mountain ridges around Wolfisberg, Farnern, and Rumisberg offer breathtaking views over the Swiss plateau to the Bernese Alps. A special tip: the sunrise above the sea of fog is an unforgettable experience.

Easy to reach – wonderfully decelerating

The area is well connected by public transport – for example via the stations Oberbipp or Wiedlisbach with bus connections to the Jura villages. The starting points are also quickly reached by car, and (usually sufficient) parking options are available.

Tip from the author

Take a break at one of the lovely mountain inns. However, check the opening hours in advance on the websites.

Directions

From Attiswil train station we first head south towards the church, where an old, historically significant 'Freistein' (free stone) stands nearby (A.1). Returning to the village, we soon see the charming town hall (B.1), and a few steps further up the Attiswil museum (C.1), which holds exhibitions annually and is also the starting point of open-air art exhibitions. Right next door is the schoolhouse at 'Bundesrat-Schmid Platz' (D.1) as well as the beginning of the ascent past the venerable mill (E.1). The forest road leads past the village brook to the cave 'Waldlochbabis' (1.1) and to the 'Mühlistein' (H.1), which lies in the brook valley after a dramatic incident. Continuing upwards, we encounter a beautiful fountain with fossils, which are common in this area (I.1).

We reach the Reckenacher area, where a memorial stone for Federal Councillor Schmid is located (K.1). Above this field, a barbecue spot offers a grand view of the Alpine chain with a panorama board. On a short detour to Chällerflüeli, we learn more about the dragon imprisoned by 'Waldlochbabis' and feel the cold, eerie breath spread by the trapped creature here (1.2)! After returning to the fire site, we take the ascent to the Teuffelen-Alp Eastery undertaking, making a detour beforehand to a place with a mythical atmosphere at the Lindenmätteli; the legend tells of the event from which this place got its name (1.3). Soon we reach the Teuffelen-Alp inn and a panel indicating a recently occurred massive rockfall (L.1). Another panel tells the story of an unfortunate tale involving a treasure of gold (1.4).

At Höchchrüz, we have reached the highest point of this hike, with wonderful views of the plateau and the Alpine chain. Here, too, a picnic spot and a story about a 'Devil’s contract at Höchchrüz' invite you to linger (1.5). Via the ridge path, we reach the Bettlerküche (beggar's kitchen) with an alpine panorama board and another legend explaining the origin of the place name 'Bättlerchuchi' (1.7). Here begins the descent to Farnern, passing the memorial stone (C.3), and an information panel about peculiar field names 'Lauche' of the ridge rocks there (E.2). In the village, the house with the sundial reminds us that the actress Hedda Koppé, known as 'Glunggebäuerin' in the Gotthelf films, spent her holidays here (B.2). At the asm parking lot, a panel provides information about the 'formation of the Farner terrace'.

Shorter variant (ascent only to Alpfelenhof)

Shortcut from Alpfelenhof (F.1) towards Bleuerhof (area 'Weltacker') to the glacier erratic 'Bärnerstein' (G.1), over Dettenbühl to the barefoot path PRO JURA BIPPERAMT above Wiedlisbach (Stierenweid), to Wiedlisbach train station and back to Attiswil.

Food options in various restaurants (Attiswil, Farnern) and various alpine inns.
