Grenzpfad Napfbergland: from Trubschachen to Schangnau
On this hike, you will climb the highest Emmental hill, the Wachthubel. The 13-kilometre tour begins in Trubschachen, where you can fill your backpack (and energy reserves) with delicious “Güetzi” (biscuits) at the Kambly factory. Then it’s off to the first highlight, the Rämisgummenhoger. In the spring especially, this hill is a feast for the eyes, as it is covered in blossoming crocuses. A beautiful natural spectacle – and one that should always be enjoyed with care and consideration for nature. You then continue to the Wachthubel at 1,414 metres above sea level. It is a wonderful place for enjoying a rest, a picnic, and the stunning view of the Emmental’s lush green hills. The hike ends in Schangnau – but if you’ve still got some energy left, we recommend extending the hike and treating yourself to an overnight stay at the famous Kemmeriboden Bad hotel.
Part of the unique natural landscape of the Napf region lies in the Emmental. This paradise for hiking, walking and biking connects the Emmental, the UNESCO Entlebuch Biosphere and Willisau.
Alpine panoramas and a suspension bridge in the Oberaargau
This high-altitude hike takes you from the Oberaargau to the canton of Solothurn. Spectacular views and an adrenaline rush await! The loop trail begins at the Bettlerküche area in Farnern. Soon after, you can stop at Bergwirtschaft Hofbergli for a snack and a break – and maybe to muster up the courage to cross the suspension bridge that’s coming up? We hope you’re not afraid of heights! But we promise that the views make it all worthwhile. To calm your nerves and refuel, we suggest a tasty lunch at the restaurant Niederwiler Stierenberg before tackling the last part of the hike. The steep descent will take you past rustic houses and back to your starting point in Farnern.
Römerweg (Roman heritage trail) in Laupen
This former Roman road once lead travellers to Aventicum (now Avenches). Today, the two-hour hike along the Roman road in Laupen is the perfect activity for relaxed, history-interested hikers. From Laupen, it runs alongside the Saane River until you get to the bridge by the Alte Amtsschreiberei (old registrar’s office). Then you head into the idyllic floodplain forest. We recommend taking a detour to the Auried nature reserve here, where you can watch different species of birds, among other things. Back on the Römerweg, informative panels tell of past events, and you’ll soon pass a historic site with Roman gallows. The inviting spot where the rivers Sense and Saane come together is perfect for a well-deserved break.
Gantrisch Panorama Trail and Gäggersteg
The Gantrisch Panorama Trail combines stunning views, picturesque picnic spots, and the family-friendly Gäggersteg boardwalk – a fun adventure for hikers of all ages. The name of this route is no coincidence: it is one of the most scenic hiking trails in the Bernese Prealps. As it is 22 kilometres long, it does require a bit of endurance. But not to worry: you don’t necessarily have to do it all in one day. The hike begins in Zollhaus and ends in Gurnigelbad or vice versa. Highlights along the way include the scenic points Schüpfeflue and Pfyffe and the Gäggersteg, an elevated wooden boardwalk over the deadwood – caused by a historic cyclone in 1999 – on the Pfyffe. Please note: The Gäggersteg is closed in winter, so make sure to check before you go.
If you decide to hike the Gantrisch Panorama Trail in two days, we recommend spending the night at the charming Gantrisch Lodge Ottenleuebad. It’s perfect for resting and recovering.
