Discover Bern by Bike
Which gravel or road bike routes have the best views? And where are the best mountain bike trails in Bern? Find the answers to these and other questions in our bike guide. Ambitious road bike aficionados or relaxed fair-weather cyclists – there’s something for everyone.
Road Bike
Want to enjoy the diversity of the Bernese countryside but get in some physical activity, too? Then a tour on a road bike is the thing for you! “Gümmeler” (road cyclists) can be seen throughout the region. We particularly recommend a tour through the hilly landscapes of the Emmental valley – challenging climbs are rewarded with a downhill experience that takes you past lush green meadows and traditional farmhouses. And there are plenty of charming restaurants and farm shops along the way to recharge your batteries. Take a look at our favourite road bike tours in the region.
Gravel Bike
Riding solely on paved roads is too boring, but you want to cover some distance in addition to riding downhill sections? Then the gravel bike is for you: it’s the ideal combination of physical challenge and enjoying nature. Be it for a short after-work ride or a day trip with friends: you’ll find routes for all levels in and around Bern. We recommend exploring the impressive Gantrisch Nature Park with its pre-alpine terrain, were gravel roads alternate with asphalt passages. Or pick one of the many other diverse routes that the region of Bern has to offer!
Combine cycling and public transport cleverly: bicycles can be taken on many trains and buses. Bike transport from station to station is also available. More information here.
Mountain Bike
From flow trails to skill parks to single tracks: the region of Bern has lots to offer for mountain bikers – always set in peaceful nature and with stunning views. Tip: in only 15 minutes, you can ride from the city centre to Bern’s local mountain, the Gurten, where the Gurten Trail awaits, an ideal trail for beginners and more experienced riders alike. The 1.7 kilometres are full of jumps and berms. And if you’re mostly into the “down” part of downhill biking and not too keen on riding uphill, this trail is perfect for you, as bikes are allowed in the Gurten funicular.

“Veloflickbuch” by Nora Ryser
It’s annoying when the bike chain drops. And even more annoying to have a flat tire. Thanks to the “Veloflickbuch” (bicycle repair book), repairing becomes easy-peasy! It offers instructions on how to repair and maintain your bike all by yourself. The book is suitable for children from the age of ten as well as adults. Fittingly, the book by Bernese illustrator Nora Ryser is sold in the Chinderbuechlade children’s bookstore in Bern’s Old City.
