World Cheese Awards
What’s that smell? It’s the fragrant deliciousness known as cheese, celebrated at the 37th edition of the World Cheese Awards. The largest cheese event in the world brings hundreds of cheese cherishers from Switzerland and abroad to the federal city. Some 5,000 cheeses from 50 countries are submitted for blind tasting and assessment by an international jury of no less than 250 members. In addition to the award for the world’s best cheese, the Super Gold Winner, there are so-called Trophies in special categories such as “Best Artisan Cheese”, “Best Raw Milk Cheese” and “Best Female Cheesemaker”. There are also numerous side events that will be taking place on the Bernexpo site, a varied programme offering fascinating insights into the world of Swiss cheese. At the “Cheesefest” next to the Festhalle event hall, cheesemakers present their (ahem) holey goods and there’s fun and games for visitors of all ages, with a cow milking competition and a bouncy castle for the youngest ones. Inside the Festhalle, the Swiss Fine Food Market awaits: on 2,000 square metres, visitors can sample regional delicacies and different cheese and beer combinations and meet the Kaltbachhöhlen cave master. Musical entertainment is also provided, with various concerts on three different stages over the course of the event.
