Everything about Swiss cheese in Bern
Is your mouth watering just by thinking of cheese? From Emmentaler AOP and tangy Hobelkäse to creative vegan alternatives, Bern is the perfect place to experience Switzerland’s “dairy gold” in all its forms. Here’s a taste of what the region has to offer.
Discover Bern’s cheese cellars
In the “Chäs Chäuer” beneath “Chäsbueb”, Bernese hospitality and regional cheese culture come together in a truly unique setting. Surrounded by maturing cheese wheels and the aroma of melted cheese, everyday life fades into the background. Whether it’s classic fondue, hearty raclette or lovingly prepared cheese platters, cheese lovers are in for a treat. Guests gather at long wooden tables in a convivial atmosphere, accompanied by a glass of wine and, to finish, a slice of homemade cake. Those looking for more can book a spot at the atmospheric brunch or the Raclette Candle Light, where they can sample up to 20 varieties of cheese.
In the “Chäshütte”, you can savour well-aged cheese from the vaulted cellars, sample their famous house fondue blend, or enjoy a variety of raclette cheeses right in the heart of Bern’s UNESCO-listed old town.
Emmental Show Dairy
At the Emmental Show Dairy, cheese-making tradition becomes an experience. The former production site is open to visitors, offering a unique glimpse into the world of the famous Emmental cheese. Among giant copper vats and the unmistakable aroma of ripening cheese, you’ll see how the holes get into the cheese. The interactive King’s Way Tour brings the story of Emmental cheese to life in an entertaining and educational way. Groups can even try their hand at Stöckli cheese-making in the historic dairy building and craft their own wheel of cheese. The show dairy blends living tradition with indulgence, making a visit to Emmental truly unforgettable
At Gourmino’s cheese house, thousands of wheels of Emmentaler AOP and Le Gruyère AOP mature in underground vaults. Guided tours of the historic cheese cellars in Langnau provide fascinating insights into cheese trading, craftsmanship and care.
Visit a mountain or Alpine dairy
Bernese Alpine cheese is made where cows graze on lush meadows and the air is filled with the scent of hay and wood smoke. Scattered across the region are numerous dairies – many are family-run, carrying with them centuries of knowledge. During the Alpine summer, careful craftsmanship transforms fresh milk into cheese that is more than just a product. It tells stories of steep slopes, early mornings and life lived in rhythm with nature. Whether mild or tangy, each wheel bears the unmistakable signature of its cheesemaker. Many dairies invite visitors to taste their creations or sell their specialities directly from the alp. That way, a trip to the Bernese foothills quickly becomes a culinary journey.
Gantrisch shows how tradition can innovate: on Alp Nünenen, a mobile cheesemaking container transforms fresh milk into fine cheese and gelato made to an original recipe.
The Mammoth Cheese
It all started with an idea and love for cheese. Three cheesemakers from Emmental set out to create something lasting: a cheese that would impress not only with its size but, above all, with its flavour. The result was the Mammoth Cheese, a true piece of Switzerland, handmade and matured with passion. In Aarwangen, Dürrenroth and Gondiswil, the wheels slowly take shape: crafted in copper vats from silage-free raw milk, nurtured with care and left to mature under perfect conditions. The outcome? Two distinctive varieties: the Red, mild and nutty, and the Black, bold and full of character. And as the name suggests, these cheeses are giants in every sense: With wheels measuring up to 85 centimetres across and tipping the scales at 55 kilograms, they are as impressive to behold as they are to taste. Perfect for an apéro, a celebration with friends or simply as a little treat whenever the mood strikes.

Buying and enjoying cheese
Brunch with a creamy soft cheese? An afternoon “Zvieri” (snack) with Hobelkäse? Or maybe a cheese shopping spree to a local farm shop or Bern’s weekly market? In Bern, cheese is always in good company. Local markets, delis and restaurants with regional specialities bring the taste of the region to the table. And we’ve rounded up the best fondue spots in town for those who prefer their cheese melted.
In the Bern region, cheese is made with care and responsibility. Many producers focus on animal welfare, short supply chains and natural ageing methods. And if you’re looking for lactose-free cheese or vegan alternatives, the successful Bern-based company New Roots has you covered.
I dream of cheese
The Gasthof Kuttelbad in the Napf region offers a truly original overnight stay: the Schlafkäse (the cheese pod). This cheese-themed wooden pod opens to reveal two cosy beds and the chance to drift off beneath the stars. Part tradition, part dream, it’s a delightfully whimsical way to spend the night. Two single beds can be moved outside on warm nights – for a true open-air sleeping experience. If it gets stormy or chilly, a heating system ensures comfort. And when it rains, a weatherproof cover keeps the “Huduwätter” (bad weather) at bay. If you prefer something a little more classic, charming, traditional rooms are available right next door.
Did you know? Swiss cheese is as much part of the country’s identity as watches and chocolate. Each person enjoys over 22 kilos of it per year. And the famous holes? They’re not made by hungry mice but by tiny bacteria. Find more fascinating facts here.
