Four visitors linger in front of a huge, detailed winter landscape in the Franz Gertsch Museum. Two are sitting on a bench, two are standing in front of it in amazement. The scene radiates calm and contemplation - a moment of pause in the fascinating world of art.

Day 1

Morning

The best way to start the day in Bern is well informed and stress-free. So your first stop should be the Tourist Information at Bern main station, where you’ll get great insider tips from our Bern experts and can buy the Museum Card for easy access to Bern’s museums. Afterwards, we recommend a laid-back breakfast in one of Bern’s many wonderful cafés. Volver, for example, with a view of the town hall. Or maybe you prefer a café in one of the iconic vaulted cellars? If you’re in Bern on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, be sure to pay a visit – free of charge – to the Galerie da Mihi.

Noon

By now, your stomach is probably starting to grumble. Off to Bern’s Museum Quarter! It is located across Kornhausbrücke by the tram stop “Helvetiaplatz”. In addition to all the exciting exhibitions (that we will get to later), many of the museums have their own cafés or restaurants that are perfect for a pre-visit bite to eat. There’s the las alps at the Alps, for example, or the Café Pavillon by the Museum of Communication. If you prefer something a bit more elevated, book a table at the Gault Millau-awarded Steinhalle in the west wing of the Bernisches Historisches Museum.

Afternoon

This is where all those exhibitions come in. With the Museum Card, you have unlimited access to the many diverse museums in the city of Bern. Now all you need to do is try and decide on an exhibition! To make it easier, we’ve provided some recommendations below.

Culture, history, science, art and innovation come together in the Museum Quarter and inspire visitors with a vibrant interplay of impressions and emotions. The network comprises eleven cultural institutions.

First, we’re headed to the Museum of Communication. A cultural institution that specializes in innovative and interactive exhibitions and was even named “Museum of the Year” by the Council of Europe in 2019. If you are interested in nature and the environment, visit the Natural History Museum or the ALPS (Swiss Alpine Museum) next. For history buffs, the exhibitions at the Bernisches Historisches Museum are a must. This museum not only impresses with its building that looks straight out of a fairytale, but also with its varied exhibitions on history, archaeology and society.

Between visits, we recommend stopping off at the Kunsthalle Bar in summer or year-round at the Kulturcasino to enjoy a home-made iced tea or coffee.

All those impressions and new information need to be processed. An extensive, laid-back Apéro (drinks and snacks) is just the thing after visiting the museums. Our favourite bars include the Vigneron wine bistro in the lower old town and the Delinat wine bar – the perfect places to enjoy a fine wine before dinner.

Evening

Dinner is calling! Culture vultures have a colourful selection of options for a varied evening programme. But there is no way around Bühnen Bern. Whether a concert by the Bern Symphony Orchestra, a visit to the theatre, or dinner at the theatre pub Vierte Wand – there’s something for everyone. The latter is located right behind the Stadttheater and delights with a small but fine menu and an exquisite selection of wines, served at the longest table in the city.

See a performance at Bühnen Bern

Bühnen Bern combines opera, drama, ballet and the Bern Symphony Orchestra under one roof. Each season, countless performances are staged in the impressive Stadttheater and at Casino Bern in the heart of Bern’s old town as well as at the Vidmarhallen, located in a former factory building in the Liebefeld neighbourhood. We guarantee you’ll always find something in the Bühnen Bern programme. There’s a suitable production for every visitor, including children.

Spend the night at Kursaal

Views of Bern’s old town and the Alps? Check! A central location that’s easily reachable on foot, by bike, and by public transport? Check! Tasty breakfast? Check! Regular cultural events on site? Check! Comfy beds for a relaxed sleep to process the day’s events? Check! An overnight stay at the Kursaal has everything we could ask for, making it the ideal accommodation for culture enthusiasts.

Day 2

Morning

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so we’re starting off at Wartsaal in the Lorraine neighbourhood with a relaxed “Zmorge” (breakfast). Then we’re staying in the neighbourhood and buying everything we need for a lunchtime picnic in the little neighbourhood shop Lola next door.

Bern’s Botanical Garden

Just a few minutes’ walk from Lola, you’ll find one of the many green spaces in the the city: the Botanical Garden. But the BoGa, as the locals call it, is not just a beautiful park – it is a true oasis. Botany enthusiasts can marvel at over 5,500 plants from all over the world in the open-air park facilities as well as the seven public greenhouses, home to plants from different climate zones. You’ll find everything from orchids and palm trees to ferns and succulents. And if you look closely, you might spot some colourful butterflies fluttering by or a ripening little pineapple.

Getting hungry? Find a cosy spot on the grounds of the Botanical Garden, get out your picnic and enjoy a meal surrounded by greenery and blooms.

Afternoon

After yesterday’s afternoon in the Museum Quarter, today’s is all about art. On the other side of Lorrainebrücke stands the Kunstmuseum Bern, one of the oldest museums of fine art in the country. Its collection comprises over 50,000 masterpieces by national and international artists such as Albert Anker, Meret Oppenheim, Claude Monet and Paul Klee.

Speaking of Paul Klee: Bern is home to the world’s most comprehensive Klee collection. It is exhibited in our next stop, the Zentrum Paul Klee in the east of the city. But it’s not just the centre’s exhibitions that impress: the building itself is also a stunning work of art. It was designed by star architect Renzo Piano.

After all that world-class art, you need an Apéro in a cosy café in one of Bern’s neighbourhoods. Luckily, the charming Riva on Lake Egel is not far from the Zentrum Paul Klee. A drink and light snack followed by a refreshing a walk around the lake are perfect for recapping the day and discussing the works of the famous artists.

Evening

Before you dive into another evening filled with cultural treats at Ono, it’s time for some culinary ones at Zunft zur Webern. “Zünfte” (Guilds) have a long tradition in Bern and the restaurant of the Webern guild is one of the lower old town’s most traditional pubs. The “Wäbere”, as the restaurant is colloquially known, serves traditional Swiss dishes.

Ono – oh, yes!

After dinner, you’re all set for a visit to Ono, the oldest independent theatre in the city of Bern. A colourful cultural menu is served in the building on Kramgasse with its light-coloured sandstone walls: the programme includes cabaret, literature, music, visual arts, dance, and drama. By the way: a piece of cultural history took place here in 1954, when the vaulted cellar served as the setting for the German-language premiere of Pablo Picasso’s only stage play.

Day 3

Morning

Today, we’re leaving the city and heading to the idyllic Emmental valley. In just 20 minutes, the regional BLS train brings us from Bern to Burgdorf. Get to know the pretty Zähringen town on a 1.5-hour guided tour before heading to lunch over Burgdorf’s rooftops.

Lunch at Burgdorf Castle

After the guided tour of the town, we head to Burgdorf’s most prominent landmark: its majestic castle. What’s cool about Burgdorf Castle is that it not only houses an interesting museum, but also a stylish restaurant. In the warmer months, we recommend enjoying lunch in the shade of the tall trees in the castle courtyard – beautiful view of the surrounding hills included. By the way: in addition to the museum and the restaurant, there is also a modern youth hostel inside the castle walls – a royal night’s sleep is guaranteed here.

Afternoon

Art and culture are not particular to the federal city – Burgdorf also has plenty to offer. You’ve already heard about the museum at Burgdorf Castle, and Burgdorf is also home to the Museum Franz Gertsch, which brings visitors from all over the world to the Emmental. In addition to fascinating special exhibitions on changing themes, the institution houses a collection on a scale that is probably unique for renowned artists: it possesses almost the entire oeuvre of the eponymous Swiss artist, exhibited in an architecturally stunning building. Franz Gertsch was known for his mostly large-format woodcuts, paintings, and hyper realistic portraits. A must for art enthusiasts!

The Museum Franz Gertsch also has an in-house café for a quick break and some refreshments after the visit.

Evening

Three art and culture-filled days in Bern are drawing to a close. To celebrate your last evening, treat yourself to some “haute cuisine” at Zur Gedult in Burgdorf, honoured several times by GaultMillau and the Guide Michelin. A delicious end to your stay.
