Huttwil Christmas market
One of the largest, most beautiful and romantic Christmas markets in Switzerland can be found in the historic centre of Huttwil. Anyone heading to Oberaargau at this time of year can look forward to delicious festive treats and regional handicrafts: Over 100 lovingly decorated wooden stalls offer a wide variety of delightful products, with Advent music, candlelight, and fairytale performances setting the mood. Don’t miss it: this is one of the first Christmas markets of the season and it’s taking place at the end of October.

Langenthal Street Festival
Once a year, on a weekend in June, the streets of Langenthal transform into one big festival ground. It’s time for the Langenthal Street Festival! For two days, everything in this charming Oberaargau town revolves around enjoyment: music, food, drink, coming together, dancing and dreaming all have their place here. Spread across more than ten locations throughout the town, visitors can enjoy live performances by local bands and a tempting selection of street foods. Entry is free, artists perform for tips, and the festival supports itself through the sale of pins.

Wangen an der Aare street spectacle
Every August, on a Sunday, the quiet town of Wangen an der Aare becomes the place to be for street artists from around the world. This much-loved street theatre and performance festival has become a highlight of the local calendar, drawing crowds of all ages with its colourful, clever, and often daring displays of artistry and acrobatics. Useful information
Just like its unique local dialect – a blend of influences from Bern, Solothurn, Lucerne and Aargau – the Oberaargau region stands out with its own distinct character. Only around 35 minutes by car from Bern, this diverse area stretches from the Napf peaks to the Jura Mountains, offering everything from lush forests to gentle hills. But it’s not just the scenery that impresses. History buffs will find plenty to explore here, from the city of Langenthal, which was already settled around 4000 BC, to the medieval town of Wiedlisbach.
Highlights include the Cistercian abbey of St. Urban founded in 1194, the baroque Thunstetten Castle, and the Grünenbreg and Erlinsburg castle ruins, where the past meets the present in striking ways.
Another must-see is Aarwangen Castle, where visitors can explore the ancient walls and visit a fascinating multimedia exhibition on the region’s history and economic heritage.
